Viagra, the little blue pill which brought in a new hope for men experiencing sexual dysfunction, is celebrating 15 years since its approval by the United States Food and Drug Administration on March 27, 1998.
Pfizer`s anti-impotence drug Sildenafil, commonly known Viagra, was originally developed by British scientists Peter Dunn and Albert Wood as a cardiac drug to treat heart disease and high blood pressure. Several early trials of the drug provided little hope for its use as a heart disease treatment, but induced penile erection in volunteers undergoing the trial.
Following the results of the clinical trials, Pfizer decided to market the drug for erectile dysfunction. Viagra was patented in 1996 and on March 27, 1998 it was approved for use in erectile dysfunction by the USFDA, becoming the first oral treatment approved to treat erectile dysfunction.
